What:
Perhaps while attending an art opening or creatives’ networking event, you have heard it mentioned, and perhaps you pushed the possibility of writing your own artist statement to the margins of your thinking. Until now. Artist statements are essential for marketing, supporting exhibitions, and/or seeking funding opportunities – being able to have your own artist statement at your fingertips for any potential professional opportunity is critical. During this workshop students will have the opportunity to work independently and together to craft a polished artist statement. Each day, students will be led through an exercise, be asked to create drafts of their artist statements (minimum 3 full paragraphs), and each day will build on prior writing completing the weekend with a professional artist statement. Work will include active class participation, writing, and sharing writing for group discussion. Students will complete the workshop with their own artist statement in hand as well as practical artist’s resources to help expand the visibility, understanding, and appreciation of their art.

Note:

The instructor will be in contact with students 4-6 weeks prior to the workshop with an introductory assignments and workshop outline. Students should plan to come with their own props – laptop, paper, pen – to help them write and share writing. Participants are invited to bring a piece of their artwork to share with the group by way of an introduction the first day. A printer will be provided in the meeting space. At the end of the first session, everyone’s draft will be printed for sharing with the group and for workshopping prep for the second session.
